Assessment of Attainment of Competencies
As a library and information professional, you will need to be skilled as assessing your own learning and identifying additional things you need to know. In your journey through SIRLS, we expect students to move from dependence on faculty assessment of their achievements to a realistic self-assessment of achievement. The compentency reflections are the tools and opportunities for you to monitor your own learning and augment as you see the need.
The self-assessments of your own learning, represented in the competency reflections, will be formally reviewed at two points in your career.
Mid-Career Review
Upon completion of 18 units of study, the Competency e-Portfolio will be review for the following:
- Breadth of artifact collection
- At least one reflection for each competency
- Midpoint reflection on your career interests and professional journey
- Five professional development reports/reflections
You will be provided with coaching comments on their progress towards completion and the e-Portfolio will be assigned one of the following ratings.
- Satisfactory progress
- Marginal progress; needs some remedial work
- Unsatisfactory; repeat 18-credit review;
Students may appeal a rating of "marginal progress." A rating of "unsatisfactory" will automatically be referred to a SIRLs committee headed by the student's advisor. The student will receive remediation advice from the committee through their advisor.
Final Evaluation
Early in your final semester, your e-Portfolio will be reviewed for the following items:
- Breadth of artifact collection
- Reflections on each competency
- Midpoint “career interests” reflection
- Final reflection on entering the library and information professions
- Ten professional development reports/reflections
The e-Portfolio will be assigned one of the following ratings.
- Satisfactory
- Unsatisfactory
A review panel, including the student’s advisor, will review portfolios that receive an unsatisfactory rating. If, after review, the e-Portfolio is still deemed unsatisfactory, the student will be notified. At that point, the advisor will determine a set of timelines and requirements for bringing the e-Portfolio up to a satisfactory level.
The e-Portfolio will then be reviewed a second time by the review panel. The panel has final sign-off authority for the student's e-Portfolio.
